The Special Election took place on November 2, 2021.

Following the resignation of Trustee Kristin Gibson, the Governing Board voted to fill the vacancy by board appointment. However, a coalition of community members, along with SDFA (including many community members who made public comments) had expressed their desire to hold a Special Election. This group of community members subsequently initiated a petition to call the Special Election in accordance with the San Diego County Office of Education procedures. The petition required 399 signatures to qualify calling a special election; approximately 750 signatures were actually obtained and verified by the County Registrar of Voters.
